On 18/7/2025 at 7: 30 am , C-Care IMC Gulu held a CME session titled “Enhancing Surgical Safety” led by Dr. Amone Derrick, aimed at promoting best practices in surgical care. The session focused on reducing surgical risks by emphasizing teamwork, communication, and adherence to the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist.
Dr. Amone highlighted the global impact of surgical complications and discussed the three key safety phases: Sign In, Time Out, and Sign Out. He stressed the importance of verifying patient identity, surgical site, and availability of necessary equipment before surgery begins. He also addressed intraoperative safety measures like sterile technique, antibiotic timing, and vital sign monitoring.
Participants reviewed real-life case scenarios and were encouraged to adopt a non-punitive approach to error reporting, supporting continuous quality improvement. Postoperative safety, effective documentation, and proper patient handover were also emphasized.
The CME was well attended and fostered collaboration among surgery, anesthesia, and nursing staff. It reinforced C-Care IMC Gulu’s commitment to safer, high-quality surgical care. |
